Description The War Academy doesn't offer second chances. To clear her family’s crippling debt to the Voss Infrastructure Network, Allison has one option: earn a Class-1 Elite Commission in the Coalition Defense Force. When she is selected as one of the top fifty recruits for the Academy's newest special operations trial, she thinks her path to freedom is finally within reach. Divided into ten tactical cadres, the fifty recruits are launched into Sector 4—a ruined, post-industrial wasteland on Earth known as The Drift. The mission is supposed to be a routine subterranean evaluation drop: navigate the collapsed transit lines, retrieve localized telemetry data, and exit through the surface blast doors within forty-five minutes. Except Sector 4 isn't empty. Buried deep beneath the subway hub lies the shattered remains of a decades-old comet—and the dormant, bio-mechanical apex predator sleeping inside it. When the drop pods disturb the impact site, the creature wakes. Within minutes, radio frequencies jam, surface blast doors seal shut, and the routine drill devolves into a brutal subterranean massacre. Lacking heavy weapons or surface support, the surviving recruits are systematically hunted through dark maintenance shafts and flooded tunnels by an alien entity that absorbs thermal signatures and tracks by sound. Leading her close-knit squad, Cadre 7, Allison must unite the terrified remnants of the fifty recruits. To survive the dark, they will have to analyze chitin weaknesses, jury-rig weapons from abandoned power rails, and adapt faster than the predator hunting them. Because down in The Drift, there are no reinforcements. To make it back to the surface, they will have to prove why some soldiers are called Skaikru—because no matter the cost, they refuse to die.
