Chapter 3: THE FRIGHT LIFT TO THE SPAWL

Глава 27 · 1280 слов · ~7 мин чтения

SCENE I: THE VERTICAL SHAFT The air in the upper transfer terminal was thin, chemically scrubbed, and biting cold. Bastion slammed his shoulder against a stack of heavy titanium cargo crates, his breath coming in ragged, whistling gasps. His fingers dug into the brushed metal container as a wave of dizziness washed over him, threatening to pull his consciousness under. The neural-wipe had been interrupted, but the residual burn in his skull felt like hot oil boiling behind his eyes. Below him, the corridor echoed with the rhythmic, synchronized tramp of Captain Vane’s enforcers closing in from the lower transit junctions. "He can’t have made it past the secondary bulkhead," Vane’s voice rang out, sharp and metallic through the hallway’s acoustic vents. "Seal the manual override valves. Sweep every storage bay from section four to the freight line." Bastion pushed himself away from the crates, his boots sliding slightly on the polished white floor. He forced his eyes open, blinking away the static haze. Ahead of him, at the very end of the massive subterranean hangar bay, sat the massive portal of the Primary Freight Lift—a towering, industrial vertical elevator designed to haul raw ores and structural girders between the pristine towers of Sector 1 and the dark, sprawling industrial sumps miles below. The lift’s access gate was sealed with a heavy, triple-bolted electromagnetic lock glowing a steady, warning amber. Bastion lurched forward, his limbs feeling both leaden and hyper-vibrant as his volatile core thrashed beneath his ribs. He crossed the cavernous hangar floor, his shadow stretching long and distorted beneath the glaring white emergency strobes. As he reached the freight lift controls, a squad of three white-armored Enforcers rounded the corner of the hangar entrance, their high-voltage shock-staves crackling with deadly blue arcs. "There! Asset spotted at the lift!" one of them shouted, raising his rifle. Bastion didn't hesitate. He slammed his palm directly against the manual access panel of the lift gate, channeling the raw, untamed frequency current surging through his right arm. SCREEECH! A blinding arc of blue energy shot from his fingertips into the machine's core. The electromagnetic locks screamed in protest as internal circuits fused and shorted out. With a thunderous clack, the heavy steel bolts retracted simultaneously, and the massive freight gate blew outward, sliding open into the yawning darkness of the vertical shaft. "Fire!" Vane’s voice echoed from the corridor just as the enforcers opened up with a barrage of high-velocity kinetic rounds. Bullets sparked against the steel door-frame inches from Bastion’s head. Without looking back, Bastion dived headfirst through the opening into the dark, echoing abyss of the freight lift shaft just as the heavy iron platform began its automatic emergency descent. SCENE II: THE FALL THROUGH THE TIERS The freight lift was less a room and more an open-air industrial platform—a fifty-foot square of reinforced iron mesh suspended by four massive, humming anti-gravity cables that stretched up into the artificial ceiling of Sector 1 and down into the eternal twilight of the Sprawl. As the platform dropped into the vertical drop-shaft, the sterile, manufactured atmosphere of the upper city vanished instantly, replaced by a roaring gale of damp, chemical-laden wind rushing upward from the lower sectors. Bastion rolled across the vibrating iron floor, coughing as the heavy sulfur and oil reek of the Sprawl filled his lungs. He struggled to his hands and knees, looking up. High above him, framed by the shrinking square of the upper sector's exit, several white-armored Enforcers rushed to the edge of the shaft. They raised their heavy sidearms, firing a barrage of tracking-darts and plasma rounds down into the descending dark. The projectiles whistled past Bastion’s head, pinging sharply against the iron cables and the surrounding stone walls. One plasma round scorched the sleeve of his duster coat, the smell of burning canvas filling the air. "He's riding the freight line down to the sumps!" an enforcer's voice drifted down the hollow concrete cylinder, faint and distorted by the roaring wind. "Deploy the descent anchors! Cut the cables!" Bastion looked at the central control pillar of the platform. A heavy red manual-brake lever sat beside a shattered diagnostic screen. If the enforcers cut the primary anti-gravity cables from above, the platform wouldn't slow down—it would plummet straight down the two-mile drop at terminal velocity, turning the entire structure into a crushed tomb of twisted iron. The platform suddenly shuddered violently. A high-pitched, metallic shriek echoed from high above as the upper winch systems engaged an emergency braking protocol, cutting power to the lift. The anti-gravity fields collapsed. The platform abruptly stopped descending and began to drop free. "Damn it—" Bastion muttered, sliding backward toward the open edge of the iron mesh as gravity inverted and yanked the floor away from beneath his boots. The platform was falling. Free-falling down the center of the world. SCENE III: IGNITING THE CORE The wind was a roaring wall of pressure, tearing at Bastion’s hair and pinning him flat against the vibrating iron floor of the falling platform. The platform itself was beginning to break apart under the strain, its outer girders buckling outward as it scraped against the jagged rock walls of the subterranean descent shaft. Fifty feet below, through the gloom, the distant, pulsing neon lights of the lower Sprawl’s industrial sectors flickered like dying stars at the bottom of a well. If they hit the bottom at this speed, the impact would obliterate everything. Bastion closed his eyes, gritting his teeth until his jaw ached. The neural-wipe debt flared behind his eyes, a searing wall of white agony that threatened to erase his name, his face, and his very will to live. But beneath the pain, deep in the hollow center of his chest, the burned core beat once—steady, heavy, and demanding. Equal Will. Bastion threw his hands out, palms down against the buckling iron floor of the falling platform. He didn't fight the fall; he grabbed hold of its kinetic vector. The pale blue aura of Frequency Band Zero erupted from his skin with blinding intensity, flooding the dark metal platform with electric light. The blue arcs raced down his arms, sinking through the iron mesh and locking directly onto the plunging platform's mass. THWUMP! A massive, silent shockwave of kinetic inversion detonated downward from Bastion’s hands. The falling platform violently decelerated within a fraction of a second. The tearing sound of grinding metal echoed up the shaft as the platform's downward velocity plummeted from a lethal dive to a controlled, sliding hover. Fifty feet above the concrete floor of the lower Sprawl’s freight terminal, the platform ground to a halt, hovering for a heartbeat before settling heavily onto the docking rails with a loud, metallic clang. Bastion collapsed forward onto his hands and knees, gasping for breath. His nose was bleeding, and his entire body trembled as if every muscle had been stretched to its absolute breaking point. The blue glow beneath his skin slowly receded, fading into a dull, subterranean ember. Above him, the deep shaft was silent, save for the whistling wind and the distant hum of the lower city's power grids. He had made it out of Sector 1. He was alive, broken, and dangerously exposed in the dark heart of the Sprawl. Bastion slowly pushed himself up, wiping the blood from his lip, and stepped off the platform onto the rain-slicked concrete of the lower level—unknowingly taking his first steps toward the sanctuary where Mira and Archivist Voss would eventually find him.
