Chapter 1: THE COBALT CHAIR

Capitolo 25 · 1249 parole · ~7 min di lettura

SCENE I: THE COLD AWAKENING Consciousness did not return to Bastion as a sunrise; it struck him like an iron spike driven straight through the base of his skull. The pain was not merely physical. It tore through his nervous system with the cold, sterile fury of a high-voltage current, flashing white across his inner eyelids before fading into a deep, bruised gray. He tried to draw breath, but his chest felt locked in a vise of thick, industrial resin. Every time his lungs expanded, a jagged shard of fire flared behind his ribs, right where his sternum met his collarbone. "Neural cascade at eighty-four percent, Regent," a sharp, synthetic voice echoed from somewhere above him in the dark. "The subject’s cognitive baseline is fracturing under the frequency load. If we push past ninety, we risk a total core burnout." "Let it burn, Doctor," a second voice replied—cold, level, and entirely devoid of human warmth. It was a voice that smelled of ozone and polished chrome. "A blank slate is worth a dozen imperfect weapons. Finish the wipe." Bastion wanted to scream, but his jaw was clamped shut by a heavy steel bite-guard. Thick, braided cables of cobalt-blue fiber-optics ran from the arms of the chair directly into the base of his neck, pulsing with a rhythmic, sickening throb that matched the erratic beat of his heart. He opened his eyes, though his vision was smeared with grease and blurring static. He was strapped into a high-backed chair of dark, brushed titanium that sat in the absolute center of a circular amphitheater. Above him, a massive ring of cryogenic coolant vents hissed white plumes of vapor into the chilled air, casting a sickly blue pallor over the entire room. Through the haze, he could make out the towering glass observation gallery curving above the lab, where figures in immaculate silver-trimmed council robes stood watching him like specimens under a microscope. Regent Malakor stood at the front of the gallery, his hands resting lightly on the reinforced glass, his sharp, colorless eyes fixed entirely on Bastion’s face. "Listen to me, subject," Malakor’s voice hummed through the integrated room speakers, vibrating straight into Bastion’s dental work. "You had a name once. You had a history, a purpose, a family in the upper tiers. None of it matters now. The High Council has reclaimed your life to fuel the grid. Yield to the static, and the pain will cease." Bastion’s teeth ground against the steel guard. No, a voice whispered deep within the dark, crumbling ruins of his mind. No. He didn't know who he was. He couldn't remember his mother’s face, the color of the sky outside Sector 1, or how he had ended up in this chair. But as the cobalt cables pulsed harder against his neck, flooding his veins with burning liquid data, something inside his chest pushed back. It wasn't thought; it was pure, stubborn kinetic defiance. The burned core behind his ribs gave a violent, heavy thump. SCENE II: THE RUPTURE In the observation gallery, the primary monitoring console flared from a steady azure blue to a violent, warning amber. "Regent!" the lead technician shouted, his fingers flying frantically across the glass keypad as alarm klaxons began to wail overhead. "We have an unauthorized feedback loop! The subject’s bio-kinetic signature is rejecting the baseline program!" "Increase the coolant pressure," Malakor commanded without blinking, his gaze narrowing as he leaned closer to the observation glass. "Do not let the core stabilize." Down in the amphitheater, Bastion felt his skull split open with pressure. Memories—or what was left of them—were flashing behind his eyes like frames of a burning film: a soaring white spire falling into an ocean of fire... a woman’s hand reaching out through a shattered window... the cold, metallic taste of blood on his tongue. And then, a blinding flash of white light as the neural-wipe chair shorted out. CRACK! A thick plume of black smoke erupted from the right armrest of the titanium chair. The heavy steel binders locking Bastion’s wrists snapped with a deafening metallic report as a shockwave of raw, uncontained kinetic energy exploded outward from his chest. The two attending technicians were thrown backward across the laboratory floor, their lab coats fluttering as they crashed into rolling instrument trays. Bastion lurched forward, tearing the cobalt cables from the base of his neck with a brutal wrench. Hot blood sprayed across the brushed metal of the chair, but he barely felt it. The jagged fire in his chest had transformed into a roaring, golden-white furnace. Every muscle in his body hummed with a dangerous, hyper-accelerated vibration, making the air around his skin shimmer like heated asphalt. He looked down at his hands. The veins in his forearms were glowing with bright, pulsing arcs of Frequency Band Zero energy. "Subject has breached primary containment!" an automated voice blared from the ceiling speakers as red emergency strobe lights began to flash rhythmically across the sterile white walls. "All security units seal Sector 1 sublevels!" Bastion didn't wait to see who else was coming. He planted his bare boots onto the polished laboratory floor, his knees trembling slightly before locking into a firm, steady stance. He turned toward the heavy double-doors of the laboratory just as the emergency blast shutters began to grind downward from the ceiling. SCENE III: THE FIRST CHASE The blast shutters were closing fast, leaving only a three-foot gap of darkness before sealing the laboratory completely. Bastion broke into a sprint, his boots slamming against the tile floor with a terrifying, rhythmic velocity born of his newly awakened core. As he reached the threshold, he threw his shoulder forward and raised his right hand, channeling the surging energy from his chest straight into his palm. THWUMP! A concentrated wave of kinetic force blasted from his hand, striking the descending steel shutter dead-center. The heavy metal buckled inward with a shriek of tearing rivets, blowing the entire door off its hydraulic mounts and sending it crashing into the corridor beyond. Bastion vaulted through the jagged opening, tumbling onto the smooth, white-tiled floor of the upper corridor. Alarms were shrieking through the entire tier now. Heavy red and white strobe lights painted the endless, sterile hallways in alternating flashes of color. From the far end of the corridor, the heavy, mechanical tramp of boots echoed against the walls—synchronized, heavy, and closing in fast. "There! By the primary lab exit!" A squad of six High Council Enforcers rounded the corner, clad in heavy white-and-gold armor and brandishing high-voltage shock-staves. Leading them was a young, sharp-featured officer with cold, calculating eyes and a mirror-polished command visor—Captain Vane. Vane raised his sidearm, his voice cutting cleanly through the wailing sirens. "Hold your fire! The Regent wants the asset intact—even if we have to carry him out in pieces!" Bastion didn't hesitate. He spun on his heel and bolted down the intersecting service corridor, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as the neural debt in his skull threatened to pull him under. He had no plan, no map, and no idea where the corridor led. He only knew one absolute truth: he had to keep moving down. Behind him, Vane’s voice echoed down the long, white hall, cold and relentless: "Hunt him down. Don't let him reach the freight shafts."
