Chapter 3: THE PULSE OF THE IRON VEINS

Capitolo 43 · 981 parole · ~5 min di lettura

The vibration through the deck plates of the frontline transport wasn't sound; it was a rhythmic, concussive thrum that rattled the teeth in your skull. It was the unmistakable signature of the sub-siphons—massive, automated industrial lungs buried deep within Sector 4’s heavy maintenance conduits, greedily drawing the last drops of stable kinetic current away from the lower residential blocks to feed the High Council's towering spires above. Mira checked the charge on her mag-carbine, her knuckles white against the matte-black casing. Across the cramped troop bay, Voss was tethered to a bulkhead console, his cybernetic eye cycling through a rapid cascade of diagnostic green text as he sliced into the local sub-grid telemetry. "We've got about three minutes before the automated defense loops reset," Voss said, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient roar of the engine turbines. "Malakor's engineers didn't just lock down the primary valves; they’ve rigged the thermal vents to purge if the pressure drops by even five percent. If we don’t manually clamp the auxiliary bypass lines, this whole station is going to flash-fry from the inside out—taking half of Sector 4’s lower hab-blocks with it." "Then we don't let it drop," Mira said, standing up as the transport lurked violently to the left, banking hard to avoid a sweeping security search-light cutting across the toxic fog of the lower tier. "We bypass their main console entirely and crack the manual regulators by hand." The transport shuddered, its magnetic skids locking onto the rusted, corrugated docking platform of Siphon Station 4-Delta. The heavy rear ramp slammed down, instantly flooding the interior with the blinding, sulfur-yellow haze of the industrial sector and the biting stench of superheated ozone. Stepping out onto the platform, the scale of the war became painfully apparent. All around them, the sprawling verticality of Echo Prime’s lower levels was a war zone of shadows and sparks. Overhead, tracer fire from resistance anti-air nests streaked through the smog like angry neon veins, exchanging blows with automated Council drone patrols. But here, right at the threshold of the siphon core, the air hummed with a heavy, unstable static that made the hairs on Mira’s arms stand straight up—the dangerous edge of the forbidden frequency bands trying to tear through the physical air. "Move, move, move!" Voss barked, motioning two strike-team units toward the eastern catwalks while he and Mira sprinted directly toward the primary intake turbine. The entrance to the siphon control chamber was a blast door of reinforced titanium, scored and blackened by previous insurgency skirmishes. Sparks showered from the upper frame where a security turret had been half-melted by a plasma charge. Inside, the chamber was a cathedral of noise and engineering cruelty: massive hydraulic pistons hissed white-hot steam into the gloom, and towering banks of cooling towers churned gallons of dark, viscous kinetic slurry through transparent conduits. Suddenly, the shadows near the secondary cooling manifold detached themselves. Three Council Enforcers—clad in segmented, high-impact reactive armor that absorbed the dim amber lighting of the room—stepped out, their heavy energy rifles leveled dead at Mira and Voss. Their visors flared with a cold, synchronized blue glow. "Insurgency vectors confirmed," the lead Enforcer’s voice echoed, metallic and devoid of human warmth. "By order of the High Council, your kinetic debt is forfeit. Termination immediate." Mira didn't flinch. Dropping into a low slide, she unclipped an EMP pulse-charge from her belt and hurled it straight toward the Enforcer's central footing just as Voss raised his gauntlet, projecting a localized kinetic barrier that absorbed a blinding volley of plasma fire with a deafening CRACK. The EMP detonated with a sharp blue flash. The lead Enforcer’s suit locked up instantly, his rifle discharging harmlessly into the metal grating as his neural-link feedback short-circuited. Before the other two could adjust their targeting vectors, Mira cleared the distance, her boots slamming into the second Enforcer's chest plate and driving him backward over the catwalk railing into the roaring slurry trench below. Voss handled the third with clinical precision, stepping inside the guard's arc of fire and driving a localized dampening spike directly into the suit's primary power port. The Enforcer collapsed instantly, his armor slumping into a lifeless heap of dead metal and cooling circuitry. "Clear!" Voss panted, not wasting a second as he lunged toward the master terminal. His fingers flew across the glass interface, tearing away burning fiber-optic cables to expose the raw copper data-cores underneath. "Mira, get over here. The primary valve is cycling. If I don't vent the pressure through the auxiliary exhaust right now, the containment field is going to shatter." Mira stepped up beside him, her eyes tracking the jagged red warning lines pulsing across the master diagnostic screen. The pressure gauge was climbing dangerously into the crimson zone. If it blew, the localized blast would trigger a chain reaction across the entire industrial quadrant, destroying everything the resistance had fought for in Phase 1. "Do it," Mira said, placing her hand firmly over the manual override lever alongside Voss's. "Break the grid." Together, they hauled down on the heavy iron lever. With a deafening, seismic groan that shook the foundations of Sector 4, the massive industrial siphon hissed violently, its glowing red intake pipes instantly shifting to a deep, stable, breathing blue. The stolen energy rushed backward, cascading down the conduits and flooding the lower hab-blocks with clean, unthrottled power for the first time in decades. Through the reinforced observation glass of the control deck, Mira watched the flickering lights of the lower residential sector flare into a steady, brilliant life across the horizon of Echo Prime. The Siphon Wars had just claimed their biggest victory yet—and the path to Sector 1 was finally wide open.
