SCENE I: THE STERILE LABYRINTH The white-tiled corridors of Sector 1 stretched out endlessly in both directions, humming with the low, monotonous drone of atmospheric purifiers. There were no windows, no natural light, and no indication of whether it was day or night beneath the towering spires of the upper city. Bastion moved with a low, predatory crouch, his boots making barely a sound against the seamless flooring. Every breath sent a sharp, stabbing ache through his chest, but the fog in his mind was beginning to clear, replaced by a hyper-focused, raw adrenaline. His burned core thrummed behind his ribs like a caged engine, keeping time with the relentless pounding of his pulse. He ducked behind a heavy vertical conduit junction just as a squad of automated security drones whined overhead, their lenses sweeping the floor with sharp red laser grids. They're locking down every sector, Bastion thought, pressing his back against the cool steel plating of the conduit. Every checkpoint, every transit hub, every lift. The memory of the cobalt chair still burned behind his eyes. He didn't know who he was before Malakor’s technicians dragged him into the amphitheater, but he knew one thing with absolute clarity: if they caught him now, there would be nothing left of him to save. The neural wipe would be absolute. He glanced down at his right hand. The skin was pale, but beneath the surface, faint blue arcs of energy still crackled along his veins whenever he clenched his fist. He was leaking frequency. If he didn't find an exit vector off the upper tier soon, his biometric signature would light up every High Council scanner within a three-mile radius. SCENE II: THE ENFORCER'S PURSUIT A sharp, staccato burst of synthetic static crackled from a wall-mounted intercom panel ten yards down the hall. "Subject has bypassed the lower security rings," Captain Vane’s cold, clipped voice echoed through the corridor, bouncing off the pristine white walls. "All tactical units converge on Sector 1 sub-level corridors. Use non-lethal kinetic charges only. The Regent wants the core intact." Bastion pushed himself away from the conduit and broke into a fast, silent run, heading toward the intersection marked by a flashing yellow hazard indicator. The white corridors gave way to industrial gray plating as he descended deeper into the transition zones between Sector 1 and the lower Sprawl's upper thresholds. The air grew heavier here, losing its chemical crispness and taking on the familiar, bitter reek of ozone, hot oil, and sulfur. Clank. Clank. Clank. Heavy, synchronized bootfalls echoed from the intersecting corridor ahead. Bastion slid to a halt, his boots skidding across the metal grating. Three High Council Enforcers in heavy white-and-gold plate armor stepped out from the blind corner, their high-voltage shock-staves raised and crackling with lethal blue arcs. "There he is!" the lead enforcer shouted, raising his weapon. Bastion didn't think. He dropped low as a high-voltage kinetic arc hissed through the air right where his head had been a second before. He drove his palm forward, channeling the volatile energy surging inside his chest. THWUMP! A concentrated wave of kinetic force blasted from his hand, striking the center enforcer squarely in his chest-plate. The heavy soldier flew backward like a shattered doll, crashing into his two companions and sending all three sprawling across the grating in a tangle of limbs and sparking armor. Bastion didn't wait to see if they got back up. He vaulted over their fallen bodies and sprinted down the narrow maintenance tunnel, his breath burning in his throat. SCENE III: THE DESCENT TOWARD THE SHAFTS The maintenance tunnel narrowed into a steep, grated stairwell that spiraled downward into the deafening roar of the heavy industrial machinery. Bastion descended three flights of stairs at a breakneck pace, his hand gripping the cold iron handrail to keep from losing his footing. The sterile white aesthetic of Sector 1 was completely gone now, replaced by the grim, soot-stained industrial infrastructure of the lower tiers—massive hydraulic pistons pumping away in the gloom, steam pipes hissing plumes of white vapor into the dim chambers, and overhead cables humming with high-voltage current. At the base of the stairwell sat a massive, reinforced steel hatch labeled: PRIMARY FREIGHT LIFT — LEVEL 12 TO SPRAWL TRANSIT. Bastion slammed his hand against the manual release lever. The heavy locking bolts ground against each other, locked tight by an electronic security protocol. Behind him, echoing down the spiral stairwell, came the chilling sound of Captain Vane’s voice, closer this time: "Corner him at the freight junction. Do not let him reach the shafts!" Bastion gritted his teeth, the pain in his skull flaring into white-hot intensity. He pressed both hands against the heavy steel hatch, closed his eyes, and let the burning core inside his chest completely uncoil. A blinding flash of pale blue light illuminated the dark industrial chamber. With a deafening shriek of tearing metal and shorting circuits, the electronic locks blew apart in a shower of sparks, and the heavy hatch swung wide open into the vertical dark of the freight drop-shaft, setting the stage for his desperate plunge down to the Sprawl.
