War era novels are set against a war without necessarily being about combat: soldiers, yes, but also the families waiting, the towns occupied, and the years of aftermath. Frequent pairings: historical-period, tragic, military.

The tag deliberately does not promise combat. Some of these novels never reach a battlefield, they are about occupation, rationing, letters that stop arriving, and the decade afterward. That makes it a setting rather than an action tag. Pairs with tragic and class-divide more often than with anything martial. Public-domain classics written during or just after a war make up a good share of the shelf.
