Chapter 13: THE DEPT PAID

Chapter 13 · 1606 words · ~9 min read

The ascension through the core of the Solarion Spire was a blur of shattering glass, shearing steel, and screaming alarms. Bastion punched through four floor levels of white polished marble, driven upward by the raw, continuous kinetic thrust of the bonded Phase Anchor against his collarbone. Cold wind and high-altitude cloud-mist roared through the newly carved shaft, mixing with the blinding spray of golden light radiating from his chest. He broke into the Central Matrix Chamber. The apex of the Spire was a colossal, hollow dome of polarized crystal suspended seven thousand feet above the Sprawl. Outside, the indigo sky was fading into the deep, bruised purple of dusk, framed by distant, jagged mountain peaks poking through the sea of charcoal clouds below. In the center of the vast floor hung the Harmonic Cage. It was a spherical lattice of humming tungsten needles, suspended forty feet in the air by three thick, crackling energy tethers. Inside the cage rested a clear glass pod filled with glowing blue gel. Suspended inside the gel was a slender, delicate figure. Her pale hands were limp, her dark hair floating around her head like a shadow. Dozens of silver fiber-optic leads ran from her temples and spine into the tungsten frame, siphoning a steady, brilliant stream of golden frequency light directly out of her body. Mira. The moment Bastion’s boots slammed onto the crystal floor, the golden thread inside the anchor against his chest pulsed violently. A deep, agonizing chime echoed through his skull, so loud it brought him to one knee, cracking the crystal beneath his palm. He looked up at the pod. There was no recognition in his mind. No warmth of a shared childhood, no recollection of her voice, no memory of her smile. His mind was an absolute, featureless landscape of cold gray ash. And yet, his heart pounded against his ribs with a fierce, primal urgency. His body knew her. The fundamental harmonic geometry of his soul was tied to that pod, and every fiber of his muscle screamed at him to tear the tungsten needles from the glass. "It is a poetic failure, Voss," a cold voice echoed through the vast glass dome. From the shadow of the central power conduit stepped Judge Vane. The Judge had abandoned his tactical squad. He stood alone, his heavy silver plate armor covered in scorch marks, his dark visor cracked across the left eye. In his gloved hands, his six-foot Dread Blade hummed with a terrifying, violent shade of dark violet energy that caused the very air in the chamber to ripple and tear like wet paper. "You traded your history for momentum," Vane said, taking a long, heavy step forward across the crystal floor. "You traded your sister's face for a bronze cylinder. And now you stand at the apex of the world, a nameless husk holding a broken key." Bastion pushed himself up off his knee. He didn't speak. The time for words had ended in Sector 12. He raised his right wrist. The three etched gold lines near his joint flared with a blinding, incandescent white. The crystalline armor surged across his forearm and chest, fusing with the bronze Phase Anchor until his upper torso resembled a jagged, glowing statue of pure kinetic mass. Deep inside his mind, the very last pillar collapsed. His own name—Kael Voss—shrivelled into ash and blew away into the dark void. He was no longer a man with a past. He was the Kinetic Anchor. "Come then, ghost," Vane roared, raising the Dread Blade above his head with both hands. Bastion surged forward. The battle that erupted inside the Central Matrix Chamber was not a duel of steel; it was a spatial catastrophe. Vane brought the six-foot Dread Blade down in a devastating overhead cleave. Bastion didn't dodge. He raised his calcified right arm, catching the monomolecular edge straight against his forearm armor. BOOM-CRACK! The concussive impact shattered three massive panels of the surrounding crystal dome, sending three-ton sheets of glass plummeting into the clouds seven thousand feet below. Spatial distortion sparks—magenta, violet, and blinding gold—erupted from the contact point, searing Bastion's coat to rags and scorching Vane’s silver breastplate. Vane pivoted, driving a hydraulic boot into Bastion’s ribs, sending him sliding forty feet across the slick floor. Before Bastion could stabilize his stance, Vane followed with a lightning-fast thrust aimed straight at the Phase Anchor bonded to Bastion's chest. Bastion threw his body sideways, the violet tip of the blade grazing his left shoulder, slicing deep into muscle and bone. Pain flared through Bastion’s frame, hot and sharp, but he channeled the physical trauma directly into his kinetic reservoir. He spun on his heel, locked his left arm around the flat of Vane’s blade, and brought his calcified right fist around in a brutal, point-blank Aegis Slam. BANG! The concussive shockwave detonated directly against Vane’s silver helmet. The Judge’s head snapped back as the dark visor shattered completely, revealing the pale, scarred face of a hardened veteran beneath. Vane stumbled back five paces, blood streaming from his nose, but his eyes burned with fanatical resolve. "The spire... must... stand!" Vane snarled, reversing his grip and driving the hilt of the Dread Blade straight into the crystal floor beneath his feet. HUMMMMMMMMM! Vane activated the suit's emergency overload protocol. The three thick energy tethers holding Mira’s cage suddenly reversed their polarity, drawing raw, unfiltered power straight out of the Spire’s central anti-gravity engine and redirecting it into the Dread Blade. The six-foot sword ignited into a pillar of dark violet plasma twelve feet high, humming with enough spatial instability to unravel the local timeline. "If I cannot hold the anchor," Vane yelled over the deafening scream of the plasma, "I will burn this spire to the bedrock!" Vane launched himself across the chamber, bringing the massive pillar of violet destruction down straight toward Mira’s hanging glass pod. He wasn't trying to kill Bastion. He was going to destroy the Receiver Node and drop Sector 1 into the Sprawl. Bastion didn't think. There was no mind left to calculate the odds, no memory left to weigh the cost. He threw himself between the descending violet blade and the glass pod. He raised both arms, crossing his calcified fists above his head, and opened every valve of his kinetic core. Let it hit zero. MAXIMUM AEGIS SHIELD. THUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! The violet plasma blade slammed into Bastion’s golden barrier. The sky above the Solarion Spire split wide open. A massive ring of golden and violet shock-energy expanded three miles across the dusk sky, blowing the cloud deck back for ten miles in every direction. The entire crystal dome of the Central Matrix Chamber disintegrated into a million falling shards that glittered like diamonds in the sunset. Bastion felt his bones cracking under the immense spatial friction. His skin burned, his flesh tore, and the gold crystalline armor on his arms began to fracture into glittering dust. Deep inside the dark void of his mind, the final thread snapped. He forgot what he was fighting for. He forgot why he was standing in the cold wind. He forgot the word sister. He was just a wall of iron standing against the dark. "BREAK!" Vane screamed, pouring every remaining gigawatt of suit power into the blade. Bastion didn't break. He took one long, agonizing step forward into the violet flame. Then another. He reached through the plasma fire with his bare, bleeding left hand, caught Judge Vane by the throat plate of his silver armor, and drove his calcified right fist straight through the center of the Dread Blade’s hilt. CRUNCH! The monomolecular core of the Dread Blade shattered. The violet plasma backfired violently, detonating the energy pack on Vane’s chest. The concussive blast blew Judge Vane backward off the edge of the shattered floor, sending the silver-armored commander falling silently into the three-mile abyss below the Spire. Silence descended upon the ruined top of the world. The howling wind blew cold and sharp through the shattered dome. Bastion stood alone on the edge of the ruined floor. His coat was shredded, his chest bleeding, his right arm calcification dissolving into faint, dying golden embers. The bronze Phase Anchor against his collarbone gave a final, long, resonant chime—and unlocked, falling from his chest to clatter softly onto the crystal floor. High above him, the tungsten needles of the Harmonic Cage powered down. The three energy tethers dissolved into harmless static. The clear glass pod dropped five feet, landing with a soft, wet thud on the floor beside him. The glass wall of the pod hissed and slid open. The blue gel drained away into the floor vents. The slender girl inside coughed weakly, her dark eyes slowly opening as she pulled the silver leads from her temples with trembling fingers. She pushed herself up, her wet hair clinging to her face, and looked at the tall, broad man standing before her in the cold wind. "Kael?" she whispered, her voice trembling, warm and clear. Bastion stood motionless in the sunset light. He looked down at the girl. His eyes were completely blank—amber spheres emptied of history, devoid of pain, devoid of recognition. He looked at her wet face. He looked at her trembling hands. He didn't know who she was. He didn't know his own name. He slowly reached down, picked up his heavy canvas coat from the floor, and draped it gently over her shivering shoulders. "Are you hurt?" the nameless man asked softly.
