Chapter 11: ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Chapter 11 · 1561 words · ~8 min read

The wind at seven thousand feet did not blow; it hammered. It was a freezing, razor-thin squall that tore at the hem of Bastion’s canvas coat, screaming off the pressurized hull of the Vanguard Titan in a deafening, continuous roar. Below the heavy cargo freighter, the Sprawl was completely invisible—buried beneath a vast, turbulent sea of charcoal-grey storm clouds that flickered with silent, spiderweb strands of violet lightning. Above, the sky was no longer blue. It was an unnatural, deep indigo, dominated by the blinding glass-and-gold monoliths of Sector 1. Rising like iron needles from the floor of the heavens, the floating district rested upon massive anti-gravity ring arrays that hummed with a low, bone-rattling bass. At the absolute apex of the sector, hovering anchored by three mile-thick energy tethers, sat the Solarion Spire—a massive, multifaceted pyramid of white reinforced alloy and polarized crystal that caught the high-altitude sunlight like a polished diamond. Bastion landed on the aft dorsal plating of the freighter in a heavy three-point stance. His boots slammed into the cold steel with a sharp, resonant CLANG, the kinetic impact spreading out in a visible golden ripple across the ship's painted hull. Ten paces behind him, Cipherblade and Vex hit the plating, skidding across the wet, ice-slick steel before catching themselves against the housing of the starboard anti-gravity turbine. Cipherblade instantly dropped to his knees, pressing his gloved hands against the ship's maintenance panel. His violet visor flared violently as he jammed a thick data-spike straight into the hard-line optical port. "Bridge sensors are pinging dorsal hull pressure!" Cipherblade shouted over the howling gale, his vocal scrambler crackling with static. "They think we’re high-altitude hail! I’m looping the hull diagnostic feed, but we have less than forty seconds before the security grid runs a manual sweep!" Vex unslung her heavy plasma torch, snapping the ignition flint. A brilliant blue jet of localized plasma hissed to life, fighting against the freezing crosswind. "The main cargo bay hatch is sealed with three-inch military bar locks! I can cut the hinges, but the moment the seal breaks, the pressure differential will alert every enforcer on the troop deck!" Bastion stood up slowly, his tall, broad frame absorbing the brutal buffeting of the slipstream. He didn't look at the hatch. He stared up at the shimmering white pyramid of the Solarion Spire hanging in the clear indigo sky above them. His coat flapped violently against his ribs. Beneath the thick canvas, the Mark-IV Phase Anchor felt impossibly cold—a dense, unyielding weight pressing against his heart. He touched his own chest with his left hand. Mira. The name was still there, etched into his consciousness like a stone marker in a graveyard. But the girl behind the name was a complete blank. He couldn't remember her voice now. He couldn't remember if she was taller than his shoulder, or if she laughed when she was nervous, or if she preferred the quiet of the night or the light of the morning. The Mnemosyne needle had harvested every visual frame, leaving only an empty, aching void behind his eyes. Yet, as his fingers tightened over the bronze cylinder through his coat, the anchor gave a soft, rhythmic chime. A single, pure silver tone vibrated through his ribcage, through his spinal cord, and directly into his auditory cortex. It wasn't a memory. It was a live signal. She was up there. Inside the white spire. Suspended in a glass cage at the center of the Council's primary ledger, her life force being drained second by second to keep the floating palaces of Sector 1 anchored in the sky. "Voss!" Cipherblade barked, pulling his data-spike free as red warning lights began to strobe along the freighter's dorsal spine. "Security hatch override failed! Automatic defense turrets deploying on the bridge gantry!" Two dual-barreled rotary pulse cannons rose from hidden housings near the ship's cockpit, spinning up with a high-pitched, metallic whine as their red optical sensors locked onto the three figures on the roof. Bastion didn't ask Vex to cut the hinges. He didn't wait for Cipherblade to hack the turrets. He flexed his right wrist. The three etched lines near his hand ignited into a blinding, white-hot gold. Crystalline, translucent armor surged across his skin, encasing his forearm and fist in thick, jagged plates of kinetic mass. The air around his arm violently distorted, the extreme heat turning the high-altitude ice on his sleeve into a sudden cloud of white steam. Bastion took two long, heavy steps across the slick hull plating, raised his calcified right arm, and drove his fist downward into the center of the reinforced cargo hatch. ANCHOR KNUCKLE. BOOM-CRUNCH! The three-inch solid steel hatch didn't just breach—it buckled inward like wet cardboard. The violent explosive decompression roared across the roof, sucking cold cloud-mist down into the pressurized interior of the ship while tearing the two automated turrets straight off their dorsal mounts, sending them tumbling into the roaring sky behind. "Down!" Bastion rasped, his voice dropping into that terrifying, gravelly rumble. He dropped through the ruined, jagged metal opening into the dark belly of the Vanguard Titan. The cargo hold was vast, cold, and illuminated by the harsh, pulsing red glare of emergency strobes. Rows of heavy military transport vehicles were chained to the iron deck plates. Along the bulkhead walls stood hundreds of sealed glass containment units—each holding a glowing, color-coded frequency vial harvested from the lower sectors. Thousands of stolen human lives, organized by index numbers, waiting to be processed into power cells for the High Council's grand architecture. The moment Bastion's boots hit the deck plates, a squad of twelve Vanguard enforcers who had been guarding the bay raised their rifles. "Intruders on the cargo deck!" the squad leader screamed over the ship's internal comms. "Set weapons to full broadside dispersion! Neutralize the—" Bastion didn't let him finish the command. He swept his right arm across the room, flaring his calcified forearm into a wide, sweeping Aegis Barrier. The golden kinetic field expanded ten feet outward, slamming into the lead enforcers like a runaway locomotive. The three front soldiers were lifted off their feet, their white armor cracking as they were hurled thirty yards backward into a row of steel supply crates. Cipherblade and Vex dropped into the hold behind him. Vex immediately sprinted toward the main power distribution board on the port wall, jamming her plasma torch straight into the central transformer box. "I'm frying the ship's internal comms array! They won't be able to alert the Solarion Spire's automated defense grid until we're inside the docking bay!" Cipherblade drew his twin hard-light daggers, the violet plasma blades crackling to life as he intercepted two enforcers attempting to flank them from the access catwalks. His movements were surgical, precise, cutting through the kinetic joints of their armor before kicking them over the railing onto the lower deck. Bastion advanced down the center of the hold, a immovable mountain of canvas and gold armor. Every pulse bolt fired at him was swept aside by short, brutal snaps of his Aegis field. He didn't draw heavy kinetic mass for massive attacks—he kept his output tight, efficient, saving every shred of his remaining cognitive reserve for what lay at the top of the sky. Within ninety seconds, the cargo hold was quiet, save for the deep, rhythmic thrum of the ship's anti-gravity engines and the hiss of escaping hydraulic fluid. The twelve enforcers lay unconscious or immobilized among the shattered crates. Cipherblade bounded down from the catwalk, wiping green fluid from his visor. "The freighter is on automated approach! We've passed through Sector 1's lower perimeter net. Docking sequence with the Solarion Spire initiates in three minutes!" Bastion walked over to a heavy viewport set into the starboard hull plate. Outside, the Vanguard Titan was slowly gliding into a massive, cavernous docking bay cut directly into the white marble base of the Solarion Spire. High above the bay, transparent glass sky-bridges connected the central pyramid to four surrounding spires of pure white stone. Waterfalls of clear, artificial water cascades fell down the sides of the structure, glowing with pale golden light as they caught the afternoon sun. It was breathtaking. It was magnificent. It was a paradise built entirely upon the blood, memories, and crushed lives of the four million souls suffering in the darkness of Sector 12 below. "Voss," Cipherblade said quietly, stepping up beside him. "Once we step off this ship onto the Spire's docking grid, there is no escape route. The High Council controls every door, every elevator, and every atmospheric valve in that building. If we fail to breach the central matrix chamber..." "We won't fail," Bastion said. His tone was not arrogant; it was completely flat, devoid of doubt, carrying the absolute weight of a man who had already given away everything he had to lose. He reached into his coat, touched the bronze cylinder of the Mark-IV Phase Anchor one last time, and turned toward the forward ramp as the freighter's heavy docking clamps engaged with a sharp, mechanical CLACK. The doors of the sky-dock began to open.
