Chapter 10: CONVERGENCE AT DOCK ZERO

Chapter 10 · 1319 words · ~7 min read

"Ignite it with what, Voss?" Cipherblade yelled, his hands scrambling across the dead bronze interface of the pedestal as frost bloomed across his sleeves. "The primary power feeds were severed ten years ago! Without a three-hundred-gigawatt spike to jump-start the core coils, this engine is just sixty tons of cold iron!" "Then give it one," Bastion said. He didn't wait for Cipherblade's reply. Bastion took three long, heavy strides forward, placing himself directly between the twelve raised plasma rifles and the base of the Resonance Engine. "Fire!" Vane commanded. A torrent of blue plasma bolts shredded the air. Bastion flared his right arm into a blinding Aegis Barrier, not flat, but curved in a wide, semi-circular dome of compressed golden light that covered the entire width of the pedestal. TH-TH-TH-TH-THUMP! The plasma charges detonated against the kinetic barrier in rapid succession. The concussive energy rattled Bastion’s teeth, sending violent, agonizing shocks through his shoulder and down his spine. The air inside the barrier superheated in an instant, smelling of singed cloth, ozone, and scorched skin. Beneath his boots, the stone floor cracked. Burn it, the inner voice whispered from the cold void in his head. Burn every scrap left. Let the ledger hit zero. Bastion didn't just hold the barrier—he began to pull the kinetic impact of thirty plasma charges directly into his own frame. His veins surged with liquid gold, creeping from his right wrist, up his neck, and across his jaw in jagged, crystalline lines. Deep inside his mind, another piece of his life shattered into gray dust. The memory of his father’s voice calling him home for supper. Gone. The memory of the cold spring water at the edge of the farm. Gone. "Cipher!" Bastion bellowed, his voice distorted by kinetic resonance, sounding like two iron plates grinding together. "Plug the anchor into the core interface!" Cipherblade didn't hesitate. He jammed the bronze cylinder of the Mark-IV Phase Anchor directly into the central socket of the pedestal, slamming his palm down on the locking latch. CLICK. The bronze lines on the anchor aligned. Inside the cylinder, Mira's frequency strand flared into a radiant, blinding amber beam that shot straight up into the dark belly of the Resonance Engine. "Now, Voss!" Cipherblade screamed. Bastion violently collapsed the Aegis Barrier inward, condensing the raw, absorbed kinetic energy of the Vanguard barrage into a single, white-hot point at his calcified knuckle, and slammed his fist directly into the base of the central power conduit. MAXIMUM ANCHOR KNUCKLE. BOOOOOOM! A shockwave of pure golden kinetic energy exploded through the vault. The three-hundred-gigawatt kinetic surge traveled straight up the conduit lines into the Resonance Engine. High above, the six-story rings of black iron and silver alloy gave a deafening, metallic screech as they unlocked and began to spin. Faster and faster—ten revolutions per second, twenty, fifty—until the heavy iron rings became a blur of whistling silver light. The empty crystal sphere at the center of the engine ignited. A vertical beam of pure, uncorrupted golden light erupted from the sphere, punching straight up through six stories of bedrock, through the foundations of Sector 12, and shooting skyward into the clouds above the Sprawl. The twelve Vanguard enforcers were blown off their feet by the kinetic feedback, their white armor cracking as they slammed into the granite walls. Judge Vane threw his heavy silver blade across his face to block the blinding light, his boots sliding back ten feet as the floor plates buckled around him. "The frequency anchor is live!" Vex yelled over the deafening roar of the spinning engine. "The beam just blew open the atmospheric transit shaft to Dock Zero!" High above, at the top of the vertical shaft carved by the golden beam, lay the lower loading bays of Sector 1—the sky-docks where the Council's heavy industrial cargo freighters hovered, preparing for their ascent to the floating Solarion Spire. "The lift platform!" Cipherblade shouted, pointing toward a heavy iron cargo elevator suspended from four steel cables beside the machine. "The kinetic surge just powered the emergency hoists!" "Retreat is non-viable!" Vane’s voice boomed through the golden glare. The Judge surged through the blinding light, his Dread Blade whistling through the air in a horizontal cleave that sheared through the central support pillar of the engine. CRACK-CRUNCH! The giant rings wobbled, spitting white-hot arc-light as the machine began to self-destruct under the spatial strain. "Go!" Bastion barked, grabbing Vex by her belt and hurling her onto the iron floor of the cargo elevator. Cipherblade dove onto the platform a second later, clutching the diagnostic terminal to his chest. Bastion leaped onto the rising elevator just as Judge Vane reached the edge of the shaft. Vane brought his Dread Blade down in a final, desperate strike, but the monomolecular edge slammed into the thick iron floor of the rising platform, spraying orange sparks as the elevator accelerated upward into the vertical shaft at forty miles per hour. Looking down through the iron mesh of the floor, Bastion saw Judge Vane standing in the ruined vault, his silver plate illuminated by the dying, violent flares of the exploding Resonance Engine. The ascent through the three-mile atmospheric transit shaft was a blur of concrete, rusty pipes, and howling wind. The heavy cargo platform shot upward, propelled by the raw kinetic feedback of the ley-node below. Within two minutes, the dark, suffocating air of the Under-Sprawl gave way to the cold, thin mist of the cloud layer. CLANG. The elevator slammed into its top stops, locking into the iron framework of Dock Zero. They stepped out onto an open-air steel gantry suspended five thousand feet above the Sprawl. Below them lay the entire city—a vast, endless plain of neon grids, blue turbine smoke, and dark rain clouds stretching to the horizon. Above them, piercing through the golden sunset at the top of the sky, rose the shimmering, majestic glass needles of Sector 1 and the floating leviathan of the Solarion Spire. Moored to the gantry thirty yards away was a massive, armored Council sky-freighter—the Vanguard Titan. Its eight heavy anti-gravity turbines hummed with a deep, bass vibration that rattled the steel walkway beneath their feet, its loading ramps open as automated cranes hoisted heavy sealed crates of harvested frequency vials into its dark hold. "That freighter is bound for the central matrix at the Solarion Spire," Cipherblade said, pulling his hood tight against the freezing high-altitude wind. "It's the only vessel with a military clearance key that can pass through the cloud-level defense grid." Vex wiped oil from her face, staring at the glittering glass spires above the cloud deck. "There are fifty Vanguard enforcers on that ship, hacker. How do you plan to take the bridge?" Bastion walked to the front of the gantry. He pulled his canvas coat tight against his chest, feeling the heavy, bronze cylinder of the Phase Anchor resting safely inside. His mind was quiet. The memories were mostly gone now—the faces, the names, the places of his youth had been burned away to pay for the kinetic power that got them here. All that remained was the quiet, steady warmth of the golden thread against his ribs, and the single, unshakeable directive etched into his soul: Reach the top. Break the spire. Bastion flexed his right wrist. The three etched lines pulsed with a soft, steady gold—not violent, but solid, heavy, and ready. He looked at Cipherblade, then at Vex. "We don't take the bridge," Bastion said, his voice flat and unyielding against the high wind. "We take the whole sky." Bastion vaulted over the gantry railing into the clouds, dropping down toward the open loading ramp of the flying titan below.
