Sarah glanced at her watch, the hands inching closer to midnight. "I should be getting home," she said, breaking into the conversation. The table fell silent for a moment before everyone began to gather their belongings.
Daniel stood up, buttoning his jacket. "I'll walk you out," he said to Sarah. She nodded, and they began to make their way around the table, Daniel greeting each person with a polite nod or handshake. When it was Martha's turn, she gave him a smile that seemed to catch him off guard. His breath hitched slightly, but he managed a smile in return as his mind raced with thoughts he couldn't quite comprehend.
As they stepped out into the cool night air, Sarah turned to face Daniel. "So," she began, her voice barely above a whisper, "what's going on with you and Martha?"
Daniel's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"
Sarah rolled her eyes. "Come on, Daniel. I've known you since forever. I can see how you look at her."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know, Sarah. There's just something about her... But I can't act on it. Not with everything else going on."
As they walked towards Sarah's car, Daniel couldn't help but steal glances back at the house, where Martha was still visible through the window, laughing with her friends. He wondered if she could feel his gaze on her, if she knew that he was thinking about her even as he walked away.
Sarah noticed his distraction and elbowed him gently. "You know, you don't have to act on anything right now," she said softly. "Just enjoy getting to know her. It's okay to let yourself feel something again, Daniel."
Daniel sighed, shoving his hands into his pockets. "I know. It's just... complicated."
They reached Sarah's car, and she turned to face him before getting in. "Life is complicated, Daniel. But sometimes, it's worth it to take a chance on someone who makes you feel something."
Before Daniel could respond, Sarah leaned in and kissed his cheek. "Let's go lil bro," she whispered before sliding into the driver's seat and starting the engine.
Daniel shook his head
Daniel took one last look at the gathering before opening the passenger door and sliding into the seat beside Sarah. As she pulled away from the curb, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was leaving something behind or perhaps opening himself up to something new.
Sarah glanced over at him as they drove down the quiet streets of their old neighborhood.
Daniel sighed. staring out at the passing houses illuminated by soft porch lights. "Hmm i know what your thinking," he murmured after a moment. "Am Just... Having thoughts of my own ."
"About Martha?" Sarah ventured, her voice barely audible above the hum of the engine.
Daniel sighed, leaning back against the headrest. "Among other things," he admitted. "I can't help but feel like there's something going on with her, but I'm not sure what it is."
As they turned a corner, Daniel noticed Sarah's curious glance. "What?" he asked, eyebrows raised.
Sarah shrugged. "Just wondering what you're going to do about Martha."
Daniel sighed, rubbing his temples. "I don't know, Sarah. I barely know her."
Sarah chuckled. "You've known me for years and you still don't understand women."
Daniel shot her a playful glare. "Oh, really? And what makes you an expert?"
Sarah grinned. "I'm a woman. That's enough."
They fell into a comfortable silence for a few blocks before Sarah spoke up again. "She seemed interested in you too, you know."
Daniel looked at her, surprised. "What makes you say that?"
"Little things," Sarah said with a shrug. "The way she looked at you when she thought you weren't looking. The fact that she kept steering the conversation back to you."
Daniel thought back to the evening, trying to recall any signs he might have missed. He remembered Martha's smile, her laughter, the way her eyes lit up when she talked about something she was passionate about. But he also remembered how distracted she seemed towards the end of the night.
"I don't know, Sarah," he said finally. "I just... I don't want to read too much into it."
Sarah nodded understandingly as she pulled into their parents' driveway. She turned off the engine and turned to face Daniel. "Just promise me one thing," she said.
"What's that?" Daniel asked warily.
"Promise me that if Martha does turn out to be interested, you won't push her away because of... well, because of everything else going on in your life."
Daniel hesitated before nodding slowly. "I promise," he said softly.
As they climbed out of the car and walked towards the house, Daniel couldn't shake off the feeling that maybe, just maybe, Sarah was right. But he will give a thought.... As of now he was too exhausted to add another drama.
Back at the gathering, Martha was indeed distracted. Her friends had noticed it too.
"Hey Martha," one of them teased gently, nudging her with an elbow. "Where'd you go?"
Martha blinked and shook her head slightly before offering them a small smile. "Sorry," she said softly. "Just thinking about something."
The only guy left from Daniel's aside of the table leaned in towards her then, a friendly smile on his face. "Anything I can help with?" he offered.
Martha glanced at him briefly before looking away again, her expression distant. She didn't respond immediately, causing an awkward silence between them.
Seeing this, Lily stepped in smoothly, changing the topic to something lighter as Martha seemed lost in thought once more.
The guy tried once more to catch Martha's attention but she just gave him a quick glance before turning away again without saying anything further leaving him to smile awkwardly and drop the topic altogether.
Martha found herself alone in her room later that night, still unable to shake off the thoughts of Daniel. She paced back and forth, her mind racing with images of him - his smile, his laugh, the way his eyes lit up when he talked about something he was passionate about. But there was also the distant look in his eyes, the invisible barrier she could sense but couldn't quite breach. It frustrated her, this feeling of being held at arm's length. She wanted to understand him, to know what made him tick, to tear down those walls he had so carefully constructed around himself.
She spent a restless night, tossing and turning as she imagined different scenarios where she would be able to get closer to Daniel. By the time morning rolled around, she had made up her mind. She was going to find out more about him, no matter what it took.
Meanwhile, at Daniel's house, he woke up with a start, his heart pounding in his chest. He had dreamt of a horrible dream (based on how he put it) it was of a girl with her smile, her laughter, the way she challenged him. This girls was a dominating beast where he felt he couldn't escape.
He shudder while trying to remove his thoughts on that He sat up on his bed, rubbing his temples as he tried to make sense of his feelings. He had promised Sarah he wouldn't push Martha away if she showed interest in him. But that didn't mean he was ready to let anyone in just yet.
As he got ready for the day ahead, he couldn't shake off the feeling that something was different. He felt a strange mix of anticipation and apprehension at the thought of seeing Martha again. Little did he know that Martha was already making plans to see him again too.
Back at Martha's house, she was already dressed and ready to go. She grabbed her keys and headed out the door, a determined look on her face. She didn't know what awaited her at Daniel's house or how he would react to her sudden appearance. But one thing was certain she wasn't going to give up without a fight.
As she drove towards Daniel's house, she took a deep breath and said aloud to herself, "It's time to conquer that cute puppy."
