Chapter 7

Chapter 7 · 1440 words · ~8 min read

For Daniel was family, and family was all she knew,

And crossing that line could shatter their bond like a porcelain hue. Yara's reflection in the window caught her off guard, her usually vibrant eyes now clouded with conflict. She took a deep breath, steeling herself against the storm of emotions threatening as it stared back at her. She took a deep breath, steeling herself against the storm of emotions threatening to consume her. Her heart pounded in her chest, a relentless drumbeat echoing the turmoil within. She turned away from her reflection, unable to bear the sight any longer.

As she removed her apron, the fabric rustling softly in the quiet kitchen, she couldn't help but feel different. The tight chains that had once held her thoughts in place now lay broken, shattered by the intensity of their encounter. Her traditional values and norms seemed to blur at the edges, their once rigid boundaries now fluid and uncertain.

She sighed, a soft sound that held a world of confusion and longing. "Well," she whispered to herself, "what will be will be." She squared her shoulders, as if preparing for battle, and made her way to her room.

While she passed the staircase leading up to Daniel's room, she paused. Her gaze traveled upward, though she couldn't see his door from where she stood. Yet, she could feel him there, his presence as tangible as the stairs beneath her feet. She shook her head slightly, as if trying to dislodge the thought of him from her mind. But it was no use. He was there, lingering in every corner of her thoughts.

With a soft sigh, she continued on to her room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a sense of relief wash over her. This was her sanctuary, a place where she could be herself without judgment or expectation. She closed the door softly behind her and leaned against it, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath.

In Daniel's room upstairs, the atmosphere was starkly different. The air was thick with tension, his frustration palpable. He had been trying desperately to distract himself with music heavy metal songs blaring through his headphones but it seemed no match for the whirlwind of thoughts swirling in his mind.

He cursed under his breath for what felt like the hundredth time this morning. How could he have been so foolish? So selfish? He had let his desire for Yara cloud his judgment completely. He had crossed a line, that he knew he should never have approached.

But even as he chastised himself for his actions, he couldn't ignore the fact that Yara had been just as affected by their encounter as he had been. He had seen it in her eyes that spark of desire that mirrored his own.

He shook his head violently as if to rid himself of those thoughts. It didn't matter if Yara felt something too; it was wrong for them to act on it. They were seen as family or at least they were supposed to be and crossing that boundary could shatter everything they knew.

Determined to put an end to this madness once and for all, Daniel decided that he would do whatever it took to forget about what had happened. Even if it meant torturing himself with loud music until he passed out from exhaustion.

And so began Daniel's futile attempt at self-torture through music appreciation (or lack thereof). He cranked up the volume on his headphones until they rattled painfully against his ears. His current playlist consisted mostly of aggressive metal songs filled with screaming vocals and heavy drums exactly what one might listen to while trying to drown out their own thoughts.

Yet despite his best efforts at self-inflicted auditory torture, Daniel found himself unable to focus on anything but Yara. Her smile flashed through his mind like lightning; her laughter echoed in his ears like thunder; and worst of all, he could still feel the soft curve of her ass pressing against him...

Daniel groaned loudly into the empty room before turning off his music entirely and throwing himself onto his bed face first with a loud thump. Maybe sleep would help him forget; maybe sleep would give him some much-needed respite from this relentless torment.

Meanwhile, Yara lay awake in her own bed across the hall listening intently for any sign that Daniel might be awake too which he wasn't (much). When she heard nothing but silence coming from behind Daniel's door (except perhaps some muffled thumping which could have been anything), she finally allowed herself to relax enough to fall asleep too.

As the sun reached its zenith, Yara stirred from her sleep, the soft ticking of her bedside clock marking the passage of time. It was 12 pm, and the house was quiet, save for the distant hum of the refrigerator downstairs. She stretched languidly, her muscles protesting slightly from the tension of the day.

She swung her legs out of bed and began her morning routine, her mind still clouded with dreams and memories that lingered at the edges of consciousness. As she passed by Daniel's room on her way to the staircase, she paused, tilting her head to listen for any sign of life. But all was silent; perhaps he was still asleep or maybe he had already left for his morning run.

The kitchen was bathed in sunlight as she entered, dust motes dancing in the beams that streamed through the window. She tied on an apron, a habit more than necessity now, and began to prepare lunch. The afternoon meal was simple: a tomato and mozzarella salad with fresh basil from their garden, accompanied by crusty bread and cold cuts.

As she worked, she found herself stealing glances at the staircase, half-expecting Daniel to appear at any moment. But time ticked on, and there was no sign of him. She shrugged off the thought, telling herself it was better this way. They needed some space to sort through their feelings.

Lunch ready, she placed it on a tray along with a glass of lemonade and made her way upstairs to Daniel's room. She knocked softly before entering, finding him sprawled across his bed, fast asleep. His face was peaceful in slumber, all traces of yesterday's turmoil erased.

She set the tray down on his desk quietly so as not to wake him. As she turned to leave, she hesitated, her gaze lingering on him. A strand of dark hair had fallen across his forehead; she resisted the urge to brush it away. Instead, she withdrew silently and closed the door behind her.

Back downstairs, after some time. she checked her watch; it was getting late in the afternoon. Sarah would be home soon from her outing with friends. Yara quickly prepared some iced tea and lemonade for them to take outside if they wanted to enjoy the remaining sunshine.

Just as she finished setting out glasses on a tray with ice and napkins, she heard the front door open and close followed by Sarah's cheerful voice calling out, "I'm home!"

"In the kitchen," Yara replied with a smile.

Sarah appeared in the doorway a moment later, flushed from exertion but grinning broadly. "I had so much fun today," she said before noticing Yara's preparations. "Ooh! Is that for us?"

Yara nodded. "I thought you guys could take it out to the patio if you want."

Sarah helped herself to a glass of iced tea and took a sip before saying thoughtfully, "You know what we need? Some music out there too."

Yara raised an eyebrow but didn't protest as Sarah fetched a small speaker from her room and connected it to her phone. Soon upbeat pop songs filled the air as they settled onto lounge chairs under an umbrella.

For a while they chatted about Sarah's day who said what at lunch, who hooked up with whom (though Sarah refused to name names), how much money they spent at which shops but eventually Sarah's chatter tapered off into contented silence punctuated only by sips of iced tea.

It wasn't until later that evening when Daniel finally emerged from his room that Yara learned he hadn't eaten lunch after all. He apologized for sleeping through it; he claimed he must have needed more rest than usual.

Yara accepted his explanation without comment even though something about his demeanor seemed different more reserved than usual maybe? Or perhaps it was just her imagination playing tricks on her again?

Whatever it was though neither of them brought up what happened before.
