Chapter 10

Chapter 10 · 1012 words · ~6 min read

"It's time to conquer that cute puppy." Martha parked her car behind Sarah's, taking a moment to compose herself before stepping out. She hadn't been here for a long time and that night at the gathering, and she couldn't help but feel a flutter of nerves in her stomach.

So she honked so they would know she is here... She waited for the security to check on her while this was going on. Yara heard the honk and looked out the window.... Yara squinted, shielding her eyes from the sun as she tried to make out the driver of the unfamiliar car. Her eyes widened in surprise when she recognized Martha behind the wheel. She quickly buzzed the gate open and watched as Martha drove in, parking behind Sarah's car.

Meanwhile, Daniel, sprawled on the couch in the living room, looked up lazily as he heard the sound of a car door slamming shut. He sat up, furrowing his brow as he wondered who it could be. When Martha walked in, he blinked in surprise, clearly not expecting to see her.

"Martha," he said, his voice slightly hoarse from disuse. "What are you doing here?"

Martha offered him a small smile, trying to hide her nervousness. "I thought I'd drop by," she said, holding up a bag she was carrying. "I brought some food. I figured you might be bored, stuck at home all day."

Daniel raised an eyebrow, but he couldn't help the slight curve of his lips at her thoughtfulness. "Yara already made breakfast," he pointed out, but he took the bag from her nonetheless. "But Thanks."

Sarah, hearing the commotion, poked her head out of her room. "Martha!" she exclaimed, genuinely pleased to see her. "What are you doing here?"

Martha glanced at her, then back at Daniel. "I just wanted to check on you... Or don't you want me to visit" she said, her voice steady despite the flutter of nerves in her stomach. "you sure don't want me huhh...,"

Martha said while pouting.

She looks adorable. Daniel thought inwardly.

Daniel rolled his eyes, but there was a hint of amusement in his gaze. "Oh is that so well I better head to my room, Martha hope you have a great time," he said, "But if she bullies you just let me know" he said while giving her his best polite smile. but there was no heat in his words.

Yara, entering the room with a tray of drinks, looked between the three of them with a slight smile. "It's nice to have some company," she said, her eyes twinkling. "Daniel, why don't you show Martha around? I'm sure she'd love to see the house."

Daniel hesitated, but at the encouraging look from Sarah and Yara, he stood up. "Fine," he said, turning to Martha. "Want the grand tour?"

Martha nodded, trying to hide her excitement. "I'd love that," she said, following him out of the room. As they walked down the hallway, she couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. She had taken the first step, and despite Daniel's initial surprise, he hadn't pushed her away. Now, she just had to keep the momentum going. As they started the tour, Daniel led Martha through the sprawling foyer, its high ceiling adorned with an intricate crystal chandelier. "This is the living room we were just in," he said, gesturing casually towards the room they'd left behind, as if it were a cozy den instead of a space large enough to host a small party.

Martha nodded, trying to hide her awe. "It's beautiful," she commented, her eyes darting around, taking in the plush sofas, the grand piano in the corner, and the artwork on the walls that looked like original pieces. Daniel just shrugged, "It's home," he said, leading her down a wide hallway lined with more art and family portraits.

He showed her the library next, a room filled with floor to ceiling bookshelves, a ladder on rails to reach the top, and a large fireplace. "Sarah loves to read," he explained, running a hand along the spine of a book as they passed. Martha could imagine Sarah curled up in one of the leather armchairs, lost in a world of words.

Daniel then took her to the kitchen, a state of the art space with gleaming countertops and high end appliances. Yara was there, preparing lunch, and she greeted them with a warm smile. "You two make yourselves at home. I'll have this ready soon," she said, wiping her hands on her apron.

Daniel led Martha upstairs next, pointing out Sarah's room and his own before taking her to the balcony that overlooked the backyard. "And this," he said, gesturing to the expansive green space below, "is where we have our gatherings. We've had some pretty epic parties here."

Martha laughed, "I can imagine." She leaned against the railing, looking out at the perfectly manicured lawn, the pool house, and the pool itself, shimmering in the sunlight. "It's like a resort," she commented, turning to look at Daniel.

He shrugged again, but there was a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "It's just a house," he said, but Martha could tell he was enjoying her reaction. As they stood there, the sun warming their faces, Martha felt a sense of ease. She had started the day with determination, and now, she felt a spark of hope. She had broken the ice, and she was one step closer to understanding the enigma that was Daniel.
