Chapter 9: THE COLLAPSE OF THE VAULT

الفصل 23 · 1770 كلمة · ~9 دقيقة قراءة

SCENE I: THE ZERO-GRAVITY ABYSS The cathedral of lapis lazuli was no longer a hall; it was a spinning sphere of floating ruin. In the total darkness of the collapsed stasis field, the massive forty-foot stone pillars had detached from their foundations, drifting lazily through the air like colossal monoliths caught in an underground tide. Shards of blue marble, ancient brass tiles, and chunks of the soaring vaulted ceiling floated in a chaotic three-dimensional ballet. Bastion hung suspended at the center of the chamber, his body radiating a brilliant, pale blue aura of Frequency Band Zero energy. The Heart-Crystal was no longer an external object; it was embedded deep within his chest, its rhythm perfectly synchronized with the heavy, powerful thrum of his newly awakened core. Every breath he took felt lighter, sharper, and infused with an endless reservoir of kinetic strength. "Bastion!" Mira’s voice cut through the silent void, tight and strained. Bastion snapped his head toward the sound. Through the gloom, he spotted her clinging desperately to a floating bronze brazier that bobbed near the edge of the collapsing dais. A few yards away, Archivist Voss drifted peacefully, his iron cane clutched in one hand while his free arm wrapped around a drifting stone fragment, his blind eyes wide and calm despite the cataclysm. "I have you!" Bastion called out. He didn't walk across the floor—there was no floor left. He focused his intent on the kinetic field, bending the local spatial vector. With a sharp flash of blue light across his boots, Bastion propelled himself through the air like a diver cutting through deep water, closing the distance to Mira in a single, fluid leap. He caught her by the reinforced strap of her vest just as the bronze brazier slipped from her grasp and drifted off into the dark upper dome. "Are you alright?" Bastion asked, pulling her close against his side. "I'm... I'm breathing," Mira panted, her eyes wide as she stared at the glowing blue arcs pulsing along Bastion's forearms. She reached out, her gloved fingers trembling slightly as she touched the edge of his duster coat where the raw energy was rippling. "The crystal... it didn't just fuse with your armor, Bastion. It bonded directly to your neural core." "It had to," Bastion said, his voice echoing with a strange, double-toned resonance that sounded both like himself and the deep chime of the Vault. "If the stasis field collapsed without a human anchor, the entire underground shelf would have imploded into the Void Sea." "Which means we are currently sitting at the center of a two-mile-deep gravitational sinkhole," Archivist Voss added, floating gracefully over to them by pushing off a drifting marble tablet. The old man looked remarkably serene, leaning on his cane as if they were taking a casual stroll through a garden rather than floating in a collapsing subterranean tomb. "The stasis is broken, children. And when the inverted gravity wears off in less than three minutes, forty thousand tons of solid granite are going to drop straight down on our heads." Across the dark chamber, a violent coughing fit broke the silence. Captain Vane drifted out from behind a massive, floating block of lapis lazuli. His Siphon Shock-Troop exosuit was severely damaged, its primary power cells sparking dead-white light into the void. Without his heavy helmet—which had been torn off during the initial shockwave—Vane's face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce defiance as he clutched a shattered pneumatic drill against his ribs. "You... you stole the anchor," Vane choked out, his voice shaking as he pointed a trembling finger at Bastion. "The High Council... Malakor will hunt you across every realm in the Prima Verse. You can't outrun an entire empire, scavenger." Bastion looked across the void at the enforcer who had hunted them across the lower Sprawl. He didn't raise a blade, nor did he charge his core with hostile intent. He simply raised his left hand, opening his palm toward Vane. A dense, focused wave of kinetic inversion rippled from Bastion’s fingertips. The invisible pulse caught Vane’s floating exosuit squarely in the chest, reversing his vector entirely and sending the captain rocketing backward through the shattered stone archway of the spiral stairwell, deep into the upward shaft toward the surface. "Save your energy for the climb, Vane," Bastion muttered quietly. SCENE II: THE ASCENT AGAINST THE TIDE "The inverted field is collapsing!" Mira shouted, checking her ocular reader as a sudden flicker of emergency power illuminated the small diagnostic screen. "We have ninety seconds before gravity snaps back to normal! If we're still floating in the middle of this chamber when it hits, the impact will turn every bone in our bodies to dust!" "Then we don't wait for gravity," Bastion said. He reached down, grabbing Mira by the belt harness with one hand and wrapping his other arm securely around Archivist Voss’s waist. He closed his eyes, focusing the raw, uninhibited power of the Heart-Crystal burning inside his chest. The pale blue aura around his body flared into a blinding, spherical shield, illuminating the entire subterranean vault in a sharp, electric hue. "Hold on to me," Bastion commanded. "Don't let go." With a deafening crackle of spatial energy, Bastion drove his boots downward into a floating slab of granite, launching the trio straight up toward the jagged mouth of the spiral staircase like a missile fired from a subterranean tube. The world blurred into a rush of rushing air, flying stone debris, and screaming metal. They soared up the twenty-foot-wide spiral shaft at impossible speed, bypassing hundreds of feet of pristine marble stairs in a matter of seconds. As they climbed, the temporary anti-gravity field began to stutter, the air growing thick and heavy as normal gravitational pull violently reasserted itself from the top down. SLAM! Normal gravity returned with the force of a falling anvil. The sudden transition nearly tore Bastion’s arms from their sockets, but his kinetic core absorbed the brutal shockwave, redistributing the weight evenly across his shield. He planted his boots firmly onto the spiraling marble staircase halfway up the shaft, dropping to one knee while keeping Mira and Voss safely braced against his chest. Above them, the upper sections of the spiral staircase were groaning under the weight of the shifting bedrock. Massive cracks spider-webbed across the white quartz walls, and great chunks of stone were beginning to rain down from the ceiling. "The transit hall!" Mira yelled, coughing as thick clouds of gray stone dust filled the stairwell. "The whole ceiling is caving in!" "Keep moving!" Bastion roared. Pushing past the burning ache in his newly healed neural pathways, Bastion sprang upward again, taking three steps at a time with superhuman speed. His body felt lighter, fueled by the steady, rhythmic pulse of the Heart-Crystal beating inside his ribs. He carried Voss under his left arm as if the old man weighed no more than a feather, while Mira scrambled right behind him, using her magnetic boots to grip the fracturing metal handrails. With a final, desperate burst of kinetic acceleration, Bastion exploded out of the stairwell archway, hurtling headfirst into the grand hall of the Sol-Vespera Transit Hub just as the entire spiral entrance collapsed behind them into a mountain of dust and rubble. SCENE III: ESCAPE FROM THE REACHES The grand hall was a scene of utter devastation. The towering arched windows had blown outward, and the massive stone pillars were leaning at perilous angles, threatening to bring the roof down at any second. Through the gaping front entrance, the harsh, yellow-tinted daylight of the Shattered Reaches cut through the swirling dust clouds. Parked just outside the ruined threshold, its crimson thrusters roaring against the static winds, sat a heavily armored High Council Vanguard gunship. Its heavy boarding ramp was lowered, and two automatic plasma turrets were swiveling toward the interior of the hall. And standing near the ramp, dusting crushed stone from his silver-trimmed epaulets, was Captain Vane. He looked battered and bruised, but he had managed to crawl out of the shaft ahead of them. In his hand, he held a heavy emergency signal beacon, its red light blinking frantically as it transmitted their coordinates directly to Regent Malakor’s flagship in orbit. "You don't leave this Vault," Vane snarled, raising a heavy sidearm as Bastion, Mira, and Voss emerged from the rubble. Before Vane could squeeze the trigger, Bastion didn't draw a blade or fire a weapon. He raised his right hand, open and steady, and flexed his core. A concentrated wave of pure kinetic force snapped across the hall like a whip. The blast struck Vane squarely in the chest, lifting his heavy exosuit off the ground and hurling him backward through the open loading ramp of the gunship. He slammed hard against the interior bulkhead, knocked instantly unconscious. "Get to the cockpit!" Bastion shouted to Mira, shoving her toward the gunship's open ramp. "What about you?!" Mira yelled over the screaming thrusters as massive slabs of stone began to detach from the hall ceiling, crashing down around them. "I'll secure the helm! Just fly us out of here!" Bastion commanded, tossing her a master-override datapad he had scavenged from a fallen enforcer. Mira didn't hesitate. She scrambled up the boarding ramp, diving into the cockpit of the Vanguard gunship and immediately overriding the flight controls. Beside her, Archivist Voss hobbled up the ramp, leaning heavily on his iron cane before collapsing safely into the co-pilot’s jump-seat. Bastion stood alone at the threshold of the crumbling transit hall, turning back one last time to look at the buried Vault of Sol-Vespera. Deep beneath the ruined floor, the Sector 7 rift hummed in silent, distant harmony with the Heart-Crystal pulsing inside his chest. The balance of the realm had shifted. The first true anchor of Frequency Band Zero was back in human hands. As a massive section of the grand stone archway broke free and crashed down behind him, Bastion leaped backward onto the rising boarding ramp of the gunship. The ramp sealed shut with a heavy, pneumatic hiss. Inside the armored hull, the twin crimson thrusters flared to maximum output, tearing the gunship away from the sinking crater of Sector 12 and launching it straight up through the sulfur clouds toward the open, starlit expanse of the upper sky-spires. Book 2 had its anchor. The war for the Sovereign Void had officially begun.
